Authors Mentioned in Into the Wild

Connor's English Blog

                                            Paul Shepard

Paul Shepard had many notable works

including: The Tender Carnivore and the Sacred Game,

Nature and Madness, Coming Home to the Pleistocene,

Where we Belong, and the Others. My favorite line is "In

an unobstructed sky the clouds seem more massive, sometimes

grandly reflecting the earth's curvature on their concave

undersides." (4.26) Paul Shepard connects to Chris

McCandless because of his thinking of isolation to find reality

found in the last paragraph.

                                                                   Leo Tolstoy

Leo Tolstoy wrote many notable works including:

War and Peace, Anna Karenina, A Confession, The Kingdom of

God Is Within You, and Resurrection. My favorite line from hi

quote is "I wanted movement and not a calm course of

existence." (3.15) Leo Tolstoy connects to Chris because of how

he loved to travel.

                                         Thomas Roszak

Thomas Roszak wrote Glass House: A Family

Home. My favorite line from his quote is "It may, after all, be

the bad habi of creative talents to invest themselves in

pathological extremes that yield remarkable insights" (8.70)

Thomas Roszak connects with Chris in his belief that you must

go through dangerous and extreme situations to yield great

rewards.

I really like the quote "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." by Helen Keller I think Chris was doing what he wanted on his trip across the United States and he was happy with his goal of the trip to Alaska.

Hawaiin Paradise

                                                                                  Hawaii

I would like to visit Hawaii because of all the interesting culture and beautiful landscapes of the islands. I would get there from an airplane and would get to enjoy my sojourn in a sunny atmosphere and spend time on the incredible beaches there. The floral necklaces and luau are what Hawaii is known for. Hawaii's southeastern island has five volcanoes and new land is formed from them which would be interesting to see and I'd love to try the exotic foods of the natives there.

                         Isolation in Alaska

Into the Wild takes place in Alaska where Christopher McCandless hitchhiked wanting to live off the land. McCandless was brought up in Annandale,Virginia and graduated, with high grades from Emory University. After his graduation he stopped communicating with his family, donated his bank account to charity, and traveled across the Western United States. McCandless brought a few belongings such as ten pounds of rice, a .22 caliber rifle, several boxes filled with rifle rounds, a camera, and some reading materials. His backpack contained his wallet with identification, his social security card, money, and library cards. McCandless died of starvation after more the one hundred days of living by himself in the wilderness. His body was found on an abandoned bus. John Krakauer retraced McCandless' steps and wrote Into the Wild one year after McCandless' death.
